Why batteries die in Fort Worth

Fort Worth is hard on batteries at both ends of the year. NWS 1991–2020 normals for DFW Airport put the average July high at 95.6°F and August at 95.8°F, with about 20 days a year at 100°F or more. AAA Texas names heat and vibration as a battery's worst enemies and puts typical life at three to five years, so a battery that has seen three Fort Worth summers deserves a test.

Winter finishes the job. DFW's average first freeze comes around November 22, and January nights average 36.1°F. In February 2021 the airport stayed at or below freezing for 139 straight hours and hit −2°F. A battery weakened in August often fails on the first frosty morning.

Driving habits add to it. Short hops between Near Southside, downtown and the Cultural District never let the alternator catch up. Cars left for days in DFW's Remote lots or TCU garages slowly drain, and long idles in I-35W construction traffic with the A/C on full take charge without putting much back.

Which jump do you need?

  • Cars and crossoversThe most common call: a sedan or crossover that clicks or cranks slowly after a hot week or the first cold morning. The driver boosts it, then checks battery and charging voltage.Tell the operator: Make, model, year, and whether the dash lights come on.
  • Pickups and full-size SUVsPickups are everywhere from Alliance to Benbrook. Light bars and inverters can drain a battery overnight. A standard jump usually works for gas trucks.Tell the operator: Truck size, wired accessories, and whether it is nose-in against a wall.
  • HybridsA hybrid that will not go to Ready usually has a flat 12-volt battery, not a dead hybrid pack. The driver boosts the 12-volt or the jump posts.Tell the operator: Model, year, and any warning on the screen.
  • EVs (12-volt only)An EV can show full range and still be dead if its small 12-volt battery is flat. Doors, screens and the drive system will not wake up without it, and that 12-volt system is what a jump fixes.Tell the operator: Make, model, and the last range reading you saw.
  • Diesel trucksDiesels need more cranking power, especially on a cold Tarrant County morning, so the dispatcher sends a heavier booster for diesel pickups and larger work trucks.Tell the operator: Engine size, one or two batteries, and any trailer attached.

When a jump is not the fix

  • EV main battery empty? A jump will not move it. Ask about mobile EV charging ($175 + tax). Mobile EV charging in Fort Worth.
  • Stalled in water at a low-water crossing or flooded underpass? Do not restart it. A flatbed tow is the right call. Towing in Fort Worth.
  • Starts on the jump but dies within minutes? The battery or alternator is likely done. Next step is a tow or a shop replacement. Towing in Fort Worth.

How a Fort Worth jump start works

  1. 1Call (954) 539-7718 or book online: give the DFW lot and row, the Stockyards street, or the freeway and exit.
  2. 2Price and arrival time confirmed: $140 + tax and arrival typically 30–45 minutes, both confirmed before anyone is dispatched.
  3. 3Jump and battery check: the driver boosts it, then checks voltage so you know whether it will reach Wedgwood or needs a shop.

While you wait in Fort Worth

  • On a shoulder of I-35W, I-30 or Loop 820, keep hazards on and stay buckled, or move well away from traffic if safe. Call 911 if you are in danger.
  • In summer heat, do not sit in a closed car with the engine off. Wait in shade or a nearby store.
  • On an icy morning, stop cranking a weak battery; it only drains it further.
  • If flashers are on at a low-water crossing, turn around. Never wait in rising water.
  • In a dark garage or event lot, stay locked in a lit spot until the driver calls to say they are close.

Jump start questions from Fort Worth drivers

How much is a jump start in Fort Worth?+

$140 + tax, confirmed before anyone is dispatched. No membership needed.

How soon can someone reach me?+

Arrival is typically 30–45 minutes, depending on location and traffic.

My car died in the DFW Remote lot after a trip. Can a driver come into the lot?+

Yes. Give the lot, row marker and airport entry, and keep your parking receipt handy for the exit. The airport's parking pages do not list a free jump service, so plan on a private call.

Can I get a jump at Dickies Arena after a rodeo or concert?+

Yes. Give the garage level or lot color and row, and call early, since event traffic on Montgomery Street and Trail Drive builds quickly.

Will the Tarrant County Courtesy Patrol jump my car instead?+

It may, if you are on a major highway and a unit is nearby. The Sheriff's Office lists jump starts among its services. In a lot or garage, a private call is usually the way.

What does Texas law say about drivers passing a tow truck on Loop 820?+

Texas Transportation Code 545.157 requires drivers to leave the lane next to a stopped tow truck with lights on, or slow to 20 mph below the limit.

My EV shows plenty of range but will not unlock after sitting at a TCU garage. Is that a jump?+

Usually, yes. That points to a flat 12-volt battery. If the main battery is empty, ask about mobile EV charging.

My car stalled in high water near a flashing low-water sign. Can you jump it?+

No. Do not restart a car that stalled in water. The operator will quote a flatbed tow.
