Why batteries die in Dallas

Heat does the quiet damage. The National Weather Service lists the 1991–2020 normal high at DFW Airport at 95.6°F in July and 95.8°F in August, and 2011 set the record with 71 days at 100°F or more. Under-hood heat on a parked car runs far higher, speeding corrosion and fluid loss. AAA Texas warns that extreme heat raises the risk of dead batteries.

Winter is when a weak battery quits. The normal January low at DFW is 36.1°F, and cold cuts the power a battery can deliver. In February 2021 DFW hit -2°F and stayed at or below freezing for 139 straight hours.

Habits add to it. Short hops on Central Expressway or the Tollway with the A/C on never fully recharge a battery, and cars sit for days in airport garages, Uptown apartment structures and Victory Park lots.

Which jump do you need?

  • Cars and small SUVsMost Dallas calls are sedans and compact SUVs that went flat after a hot week or a cold snap. The driver boosts the engine and checks that the alternator is charging.Tell the operator: Make, model, and whether you hear a click, a slow crank or nothing.
  • Pickups and full-size SUVsBigger gas engines draw more current, so the provider brings a booster sized for them. Lifts or bed toppers can change how the battery is reached.Tell the operator: Engine size, any lift or accessories, and where the battery sits.
  • HybridsA hybrid that will not power on usually has a dead 12-volt battery, not a failed hybrid pack. The driver uses the jump posts under the hood and follows the maker's procedure.Tell the operator: Year and model, and whether the dash lights up when you press start.
  • Electric vehicles (12-volt)An EV can refuse to unlock or shift when its 12-volt battery dies, even with range left. A 12-volt jump wakes the car; it does not charge the main battery.Tell the operator: Model, the range showing before it died, and whether the doors or screen respond.
  • Diesel trucks and vansDiesels need more cranking power, especially on a cold North Texas morning, and many carry two batteries. The operator flags it so a heavier booster comes.Tell the operator: That it is a diesel, how many batteries, and whether the glow-plug light comes on.

When a jump is not the fix

  • An EV at zero range after a long run on I-35E or I-20 needs mobile EV charging ($175 + tax), not a jump. Mobile EV charging in Dallas.
  • If the car stalled in high water on a flooded Dallas street or underpass, do not start or jump it. It needs a flatbed tow. Towing in Dallas.
  • If it starts on a jump but dies again soon, the battery or charging system has likely failed. Next step: a tow to a shop or home, or a new battery from a parts store. Towing in Dallas.

Where you are in Dallas, and what to tell us

  • Dallas Love Field garagesName Garage A, B or C, the level and the nearest row sign. Mention the uncovered roof if that is where you are.
  • DFW Airport Remote North and Remote SouthGive the lot name and the closest shuttle stop number so the provider can find your car.

Know before you call: Dallas County runs a free freeway courtesy patrol

The Dallas County Sheriff's Office runs a Courtesy Patrol under an agreement with TxDOT, helping stranded drivers on county highways, toll roads and managed lanes. NCTCOG describes the help as free. The county lists 214-320-4444 as its dispatch number; if you are stuck in a live lane, call it or 911 first. Source

How a Dallas jump start works

  1. 1Call (954) 539-7718 or book at /book/. Give the freeway and exit, the Love Field or DFW garage level, or the Uptown building and gate.
  2. 2The operator confirms $140 + tax and an arrival of typically 30–45 minutes before dispatch, and gives you a reference number.
  3. 3The driver jumps the car, then checks the battery and charging and tells you if it is likely to last through the next Dallas heat wave or freeze.
  4. 4You pay at the end, once the engine runs. If it will not stay running, the operator can quote a tow on the same call.

While you wait in Dallas

  • If you are in a moving lane on LBJ, Stemmons or Central Expressway, stay buckled in with hazards on and call 911.
  • In summer heat, wait in shade or a cool building with water, not in a closed car.
  • During ice, avoid walking on overpasses and bridges; they freeze first.
  • Never walk or drive through water over the road. Two feet can float a car.
  • In a garage, wait where you can see the entrance and keep your phone on.

FAQ

Jump start questions from Dallas drivers

How much is a jump start in Dallas?+

$140 + tax, confirmed before anyone is sent. No membership needed.

How long will I wait?+

Arrival is typically 30–45 minutes. The operator gives the estimate for your spot when you call.

Can you reach my car on the roof of a Love Field garage?+

Yes. Give the garage letter, level and closest row marker, and keep your ticket handy for exiting.

My car died in the DFW Remote South lot after a long trip. What should I say?+

Say Remote South, the nearest shuttle stop number and the car's color and make. Ask for a battery check after the start.

Will the Dallas County Courtesy Patrol jump my battery on the freeway?+

It helps stranded drivers on county highways and toll roads (dispatch 214-320-4444), but its official pages do not list jump starts, so ask. Off the freeway, call us.

What does the Texas move-over law mean for my roadside jump?+

Transportation Code 545.157 requires drivers to leave the lane next to a stopped tow truck or emergency vehicle with lights on, or slow to 20 mph under the limit. Still park as far from traffic as you can.

My car will not start after a hard freeze. Is it the battery?+

Often. Cold cuts battery power. A slow crank or click usually responds to a jump, and the driver can tell you if the battery is near the end.
