Why batteries die in Fort Lauderdale

Heat is the steady enemy here. NWS 1991–2020 normals for Fort Lauderdale/Hollywood International put mid-July and mid-August highs near 90°F with lows near 78°F, so a battery rarely gets a cool night. AAA calls heat and vibration a battery's two worst enemies and suggests a professional check once a battery passes three years.

Cars also sit here. Travelers leave them in the airport's long-term garages, cruise passengers leave them at Port Everglades for a full sailing, and seasonal residents leave them in beach condo garages for weeks. A battery worn by summer often cannot handle that.

Short hops between Flagler Village, Victoria Park and the beach, with the air conditioning on high, can take out more charge than the alternator puts back, which is why many local dead batteries follow an ordinary errand, not a long trip.

Which jump do you need?

  • Cars and small SUVsMost calls from beach garages, Las Olas side streets and Victoria Park apartment lots are cars and compact SUVs. The driver jumps the car, then checks battery and charging voltage.Tell the operator: Make, model, garage or street, and whether it clicks, cranks slowly or shows no lights.
  • Pickups and full-size SUVsGas pickups and three-row SUVs need more current to crank, especially after sitting at a boat ramp. The driver brings a booster sized for the engine.Tell the operator: Engine size if known, any trailer hitched, and any low garage clearance bar.
  • HybridsA hybrid that will not power on usually has a weak 12-volt auxiliary battery, not a failed drive battery. The driver works only on the 12-volt side, often through posts under the hood.Tell the operator: Year, model, and whether the dash lights up when you press power.
  • Electric vehicles (12-volt only)An EV with a dead 12-volt battery may not unlock or wake its screen even with range left. That jump is covered by the $140 + tax price.Tell the operator: Whether the car shows range and whether the doors unlock.
  • Diesel trucks and vansDiesel pickups and work vans often carry two batteries and need a heavier booster, so the dispatcher notes it first.Tell the operator: That it is a diesel and how many batteries it has, if known.

When a jump is not the fix

  • An EV with an empty main high-voltage battery needs mobile EV charging ($175 + tax), not a jump. Mobile EV charging in Fort Lauderdale.
  • If the car stalled in king tide or street flooding, as in Victoria Park or the Southeast Isles, do not start it. The city warns that saltwater badly corrodes vehicles. Ask for a flatbed tow. Towing in Fort Lauderdale.
  • If the battery will not hold a charge, the next step is a tow to a shop or home, or a replacement from a shop or parts store. Replacement is not part of this service. Towing in Fort Lauderdale.

FDOT Road Rangers give limited no-cost help, including jump starts, and patrol Broward's I-95 around the clock. You cannot call one directly; dial *347 (*FHP) to reach the Florida Highway Patrol, which can send one. The Turnpike's own Road Rangers patrol is also reached at *347. Source

While you wait in Fort Lauderdale

  • In summer heat, do not sit in a closed car with the engine off; wait in shade with water.

FAQ

Jump start questions from Fort Lauderdale drivers

My car died in an FLL long-term garage. Does the airport jump cars?+

Its parking page lists no jump service. Call with the garage name and level, and a provider in our network comes for $140 + tax.

The car is dead at Port Everglades after a cruise. What do I say?+

Say you are at the port, not the airport, then give the garage (Heron or the port's Palm Garage), level and terminal.

Can a Road Ranger jump my car on I-95?+

Possibly. They patrol Broward's I-95 around the clock and jump starts are free. Dial *347. In garages and on side streets, we are a paid option.

What must drivers do when passing my stalled car?+

Under Florida Statute 316.126, drivers must leave the lane next to a disabled vehicle showing hazards on a multi-lane road, or slow to 20 mph under the limit if they cannot.

My street flooded during a king tide and now the car will not start. Should I jump it?+

No. If water reached the engine bay or floor, saltwater may have done damage. Ask for a flatbed tow to a shop.

My EV is dead in a Las Olas garage. Jump or charge?+

A dark screen and locked doors usually mean the 12-volt battery: a $140 + tax jump. If it wakes but shows no range, you need mobile EV charging ($175 + tax).

How much is it, and how soon will someone arrive?+

$140 + tax, confirmed before dispatch, no membership. Arrival is typically 30–45 minutes.
