Why batteries die in San Antonio

NWS normals for San Antonio International Airport put the July average high at 94.9°F and the low at 74.7°F, so parked cars rarely cool off overnight. AAA says heat speeds battery wear, and in hot southern areas a battery typically lasts about three years.

The damage often shows up later. A battery weakened over summer can still start the car in September, then fail on the first cool morning. January normals are a 63.3°F high and a 41.0°F low, enough to expose a battery that has lost capacity.

Driving habits add to it. Short hops on Loop 410, US-281 and I-10 rarely recharge a battery fully, and cars sit for days in airport garages, Medical Center decks and apartment lots. A dome light left on over a weekend is often all it takes.

Which jump do you need?

  • Cars and small SUVsMost calls are sedans and compact SUVs that sat in a hot lot. The driver boosts the battery, then checks voltage and charging output so you know if a parts store visit should come next.Tell the operator: Year, make and model, where the battery sits if it is not under the hood, and if you hear a click, slow cranking or nothing.
  • Pickups and full-size SUVsGas pickups and large SUVs draw more current at start-up, so the driver brings a booster sized for it.Tell the operator: Engine size, and if the truck is parked nose-in against a wall.
  • HybridsA hybrid uses a small 12-volt battery to wake its systems. When it is flat the dash stays dark and the car will not go into Ready. The driver uses the jump terminals the manufacturer specifies.Tell the operator: Model and year, and if any dash lights come on.
  • EVs (12-volt battery)A dead 12-volt battery can stop an EV from unlocking, shifting or lighting the screen even with a charged main pack. That is a $140 + tax jump, not a charging call.Tell the operator: Your last range reading and if the screen responds.
  • Diesel trucks and vansDiesel pickups and work vans on I-35 and I-37 often have two batteries, so the dispatcher sends a heavier booster.Tell the operator: That it is a diesel, and if it has dual batteries.

When a jump is not the fix

  • If an EV's main battery is empty, a jump will not move it. Ask for mobile EV charging ($175 + tax). Mobile EV charging in San Antonio.
  • If the car stalled at a low-water crossing or flooded underpass, do not jump it. Get to safety and ask for a flatbed tow once the water is down. Towing in San Antonio.
  • If the car dies again soon after a jump, the battery or alternator may be failing. The next step is a tow, or a replacement from a parts store. Towing in San Antonio.

Know before you call: Free TxDOT HERO help on area freeways

TxDOT's San Antonio Highway Emergency Response Operator (HERO) program covers about 261 miles of area highways. It is free and can jump-start batteries, change flats and add fuel. Full service runs weekdays 5 a.m. to 9 p.m., limited service other times. Call 210-732-HERO (210-732-4376). It is a good first call if you are stranded on a covered freeway during those hours. How a San Antonio jump start works

  1. 1Call (954) 539-7718 with your spot: an SAT garage level, a Frost Bank Center lot color, or the freeway, direction and last exit on Loop 410, I-10 or I-35.
  2. 2Price and arrival time confirmed: $140 + tax and typically 30–45 minutes, stated before a provider is dispatched, with a reference number.
  3. 3Driver jumps the car and checks the battery: once the engine runs, a voltage and charging check shows if a San Antonio summer has worn the battery out.
  4. 4Pay at the end: you pay once the job is done. If the car will not stay running, the driver explains the tow option first.

While you wait in San Antonio

  • On a summer afternoon a stalled car turns into an oven. If you are in a safe spot, wait in shade with water rather than in a closed car.
  • On Loop 410, I-35 or I-10, use hazard lights and stay buckled in if you cannot get clear of traffic.
  • In a storm, stay off low-water crossings and flooded underpasses. Turn around, don't drown.
  • If you are hurt, in danger, or stopped in a live lane, call 911 first.

FAQ

Jump start questions from San Antonio drivers

How much is a jump start in San Antonio, and how long does it take?+

It is $140 + tax, confirmed before anyone is sent. Arrival is typically 30–45 minutes.

Can a driver reach my level in the SAT Long-Term Parking Garage?+

In most cases, yes. Give the level and nearest row sign, or the Economy Green or Red Lot section marker.

Why did my battery die in October after working all summer?+

July highs average 94.9°F at the airport, and AAA says heat speeds battery wear. A weakened battery often fails on a cooler morning.

Should I call TxDOT HERO instead?+

HERO is free on about 261 miles of area highways and can jump batteries. On a covered freeway, 210-732-HERO is a good first call. For a garage or apartment lot, call us.

What must drivers do when passing a tow truck on I-35?+

Texas Transportation Code 545.157 requires moving out of the adjacent lane or slowing to 20 mph below the limit. It does not cover an ordinary disabled car, so stay inside if traffic is close.

Can you work on Loop 1604 near Stone Oak during the expansion?+

Yes. TxDOT's North Expansion is reshaping frontage roads, so name the closest cross street, such as Blanco Road or US-281, and say if you are on the main lanes or the access road.

My car stalled crossing water in a storm. Can you jump it?+

No. Jumping a flooded car can damage the engine and electronics. Once safe, ask for a flatbed tow.

Can you jump my car in a Frost Bank Center lot after a Spurs game?+

Yes. Give the lot color and the nearest marker. Post-game traffic is heavy, so the driver may reach you once the lot starts to clear.
