Why batteries die in Atlanta
Summer is the main threat. NOAA's 1991–2020 normals for Hartsfield-Jackson put the average July high at about 90°F, with nights near 72°F. Under the hood it gets far hotter, and that heat wears batteries out. Many fail in the first cool snap of fall.
Winter is mild, but the normal January low of about 36°F can finish off a battery weakened by a few Georgia summers. AAA advises testing any battery older than three years.
Long crawls on the Downtown Connector and the Perimeter with the air conditioning on high leave little spare charge, and cars parked for days at the airport often never fully recharge.
Which jump do you need?
- Cars and small SUVsMost Atlanta calls are sedans and compact SUVs that sat too long or lost a summer-worn battery. The driver boosts the engine and checks the battery and charging system.Tell the operator: Make, model and year, and whether you hear a click or slow cranking.
- Pickups and full-size SUVsPickups and three-row SUVs common around I-285 have bigger batteries and starters, so a larger booster is sent.Tell the operator: Model, engine size if known, and whether a trailer is attached.
- HybridsA hybrid uses a small 12-volt battery to wake its computers. If it is flat, the car will not go into ready mode, even with a charged hybrid pack. The driver jumps that 12-volt system.Tell the operator: Model, and where the 12-volt battery or jump terminal sits if you know.
- Electric vehicles (12-volt only)An EV with a dead 12-volt battery can seem fully dead: no screen, no door handles. A 12-volt jump usually brings it back. An empty main battery is a different problem.Tell the operator: Whether the screen lights up and what range it showed last.
- Diesel trucks and vansDiesels need more cranking current and often run two batteries. Work vans and trucks west of downtown fall here, and a heavier booster is sent.Tell the operator: Diesel, one battery or two, and whether it was a cold morning.
When a jump is not the fix
- If an EV's main high-voltage battery is at zero, a jump will not help. That is mobile EV charging, $175 + tax. Mobile EV charging in Atlanta.
- Summer storms can flood low streets and underpasses. If the car stalled in standing water, do not restart it; book a flatbed tow. Towing in Atlanta.
- If the car starts but dies again soon after, the battery or alternator is likely done. The driver can tow you to a shop or home; battery replacement is not offered. Towing in Atlanta.
Where you are in Atlanta, and what to tell us
- Hartsfield-Jackson parking (Economy and ATL West)Cars left a week in the Economy lots or the ATL West Deck often come back flat. - Mercedes-Benz Stadium decksThe Red, Orange and Silver decks are covered; Red and Silver list a 6'8" height limit. Give the deck, level and nearest stairwell, and expect post-game traffic on Northside Drive.
- Truist Park and The Battery AtlantaBraves fans park in the Battery decks (Red, Orange, Green, Purple, Silver, Delta) or Lot 29. Name the deck and level, plus Circle 75 Parkway or Battery Avenue as a landmark.
- Grady Memorial Hospital, Butler Street DeckThe Butler Street Parking Deck at 92 Jesse Hill Jr. Drive SE is open around the clock. After a long shift or overnight visit, give the level and nearest stairwell.
- The Downtown Connector and the PerimeterOn I-75/85 downtown or on I-285, give your direction, last exit and nearest mile marker. Mention Spaghetti Junction or the GA-400 interchange if you are near one.
Know before you call: GDOT HERO units patrol metro interstates 24/7
Georgia DOT's Highway Emergency Response Operators returned to 24/7 patrols on July 1, 2025, covering roughly 400 miles of metro Atlanta interstates. HERO units help stranded drivers with flat tires, dead batteries and empty tanks at no charge. Request help by dialing 511 or through the 511GA app; how soon a unit arrives varies. Source
How a Atlanta jump start works
- 1Call (954) 539-7718: a live operator logs the call with a reference number and asks where you are, such as an airport lot or an I-285 exit.
- 2Price and arrival time confirmed: you hear the $140 + tax price and a typical 30–45 minute arrival before a provider is dispatched.
- 3The driver jumps the car and checks the battery: you learn whether it should make the drive home through Atlanta traffic.
- 4Pay at the end: you pay $140 + tax when the job is done; if the car will not stay running, the operator can switch it to a tow.

While you wait in Atlanta
- Stuck in a live lane on the Connector or the Perimeter? Stay buckled in with hazards on, and call 911 if you are in danger.
- In July and August, a car without power heats up quickly. If it is safe, wait in shade behind a barrier.
- In a parking deck, wait near the stairwell or elevator where the driver can see you.
- Switch off the radio, lights and accessories to save what charge is left.
- On a cold morning, stop cranking a weak engine after a few tries.

FAQ
Jump start questions from Atlanta drivers
My car died in an ATL Economy lot. Should I call you or the airport?+
Try the airport's free jump-start through the Emergency Information Call Boxes first. If you would rather book with us, give the lot and row; the $140 + tax price is confirmed before dispatch.
Can a HERO unit jump my car on I-285?+
HERO units patrol metro interstates 24/7 and help with dead batteries at no cost; dial 511. If none is close, or you are off the interstate, call us.
What does Georgia's move-over law mean while I wait on the shoulder?+
Under O.C.G.A. 40-6-16, drivers must move over or slow down for stopped emergency vehicles, HERO units and wreckers with flashing lights. Fines can reach $500. Still stay well away from traffic.
Can the driver reach me in a Mercedes-Benz Stadium deck with a 6'8" clearance?+
Usually, yes. The jump uses a portable booster, so tell the operator the deck and level.
Why did my battery die in October after a hot Atlanta summer?+
With July highs averaging around 90°F, heat wears batteries down. The damage often shows on the first cool mornings.
My EV is dead near Truist Park. Is that a jump or a charge?+
A black screen usually means the 12-volt battery, so a $140 + tax jump should help. If the car powers on but shows zero range, you need mobile EV charging.
How much is a jump start in Atlanta, and how soon can someone come?+
$140 + tax, no membership. Arrival is typically 30–45 minutes, confirmed before dispatch.
